From Trash to Tudung
This October, TudungPeople is proud to introduce our Limited Edition Ocean collection – the first baby step in our initiative to move towards more sustainable and eco-friendly hijab products. The collection features 10 printed shawls made out of 100% recycled plastic bottles, with each piece of shawl saving 8 bottles from ending up in landfills or oceans. This landmark collection is the first of its kind in Malaysia.
Inspiration
The collection was inspired by TudungPeople’s founder and creative director Fazrena Aziz’s trip to Redang Island, where she experienced the beauty of Malaysia’s natural wonders but also the devastating effects of pollution. The experience spurred us to take action and think about what we could do to be more environmentally conscious. As a local brand that believes in having a strong message behind each collection, TudungPeople took the first step to produce sustainable hijabs by giving new life to plastic bottles.
Fabric
The foundation of the Limited Edition Ocean collection is the sustainable fabric that was sourced through our collaboration with KLOTH Cares. The result is a fabric made of 100% recycled plastic bottles that is beautifully smooth and soft. We wanted to show that you can get high-quality materials with on-par styling, drape, and flow from something as unlikely as a plastic drinking bottle.
Design
The collection came together after over a year of research and development. The unique design features abstract representations of ocean-themed elements such as corals, anemone, barnacles, bubbles, seaweed, and waves. Evoking a calm yet dynamic pattern, we wanted to reflect the essence of the oceans changing nature and capture its beauty and movement in a modern, quirky and bold way.
Packaging
For the packaging, Tudungpeople opted for paper can packaging made from recycled paper. Part of the campaign focuses on how the packaging can be given a second life through reuse. Made from high-quality materials that are designed to be durable, sturdy, and aesthetically pleasing so that they can be used over and over again in various ways. Ultimately, the packaging is not just a container for delivering the shawls safely, but a collectable item that becomes part of the product.
